The quote covers the clean. X-rays and extractions are decided once the dog is asleep, and that is where the bill moves.
A dog dental cleaning is quoted as an anaesthetic scale and polish, but the final bill is usually higher because dental X-rays and extractions are priced separately and can only be decided once the dog is asleep and the mouth has been examined properly. The quote normally covers pre-anaesthetic bloodwork, the anaesthetic itself, monitoring, scaling and polishing. Extractions are charged per tooth on top, and a single difficult tooth can cost more than the cleaning it was found during.
Almost every dog will need at least one dental under anaesthesia in its life, and almost every owner is surprised by the invoice. Not because the clinic did anything wrong, but because a dental is the one routine procedure where nobody, including the vet, knows the full price until the dog is already asleep.
A dental quote is a quote for the cleaning. It is not a quote for treating whatever the cleaning finds. Tartar hides the gum line, and a conscious dog will not tolerate a tooth-by-tooth examination, so the real assessment happens under general anaesthetic with a probe and X-rays. That is the moment a straightforward clean can become a clean plus four extractions. Clinics that give you a single fixed number for a dental are either building the worst case into the price or planning to phone you mid-procedure. Most publish a range instead, which is honest rather than evasive.

Same procedure, same country, eight Canadian cities. Rent, wages and how many clinics compete locally do most of the work.
The core of a dental is anaesthesia done properly. That means a pre-anaesthetic exam, bloodwork to check the liver and kidneys can handle the drugs, an intravenous catheter, fluids during the procedure, a breathing tube, a nurse monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen and temperature throughout, and recovery supervision afterwards. Only then does the scaling and polishing happen: ultrasonic scaling above and below the gum line, then polishing so the enamel is smooth and plaque has nothing to grip. A large share of what you are paying for is the anaesthetic safety, not the scaler.
Roughly two thirds of every tooth sits below the gum, invisible to the eye. A tooth can look clean and be dead, abscessed or fractured at the root. Without X-rays the vet is cleaning the part you can see and guessing about the part that hurts. That is why practices that do not offer dental radiographs are often cheaper, and why the comparison is not like for like. If a clinic quotes well below the range for your city, ask whether X-rays are included before you assume you found a bargain.
Extractions are priced per tooth, and the spread between the cheapest and the most expensive tooth in the same mouth is enormous. A loose, single-rooted incisor lifts out in seconds. A three-rooted upper carnassial in a large dog is a surgical extraction: a gum flap, bone removal, sectioning the tooth, then suturing. Same dog, same day, wildly different cost. This is the single biggest reason a dental bill lands above the quote, and it is also the reason a dental at age eight costs far more than the same dog would have paid at age three.
Owners of older dogs often delay a dental because of the anaesthetic risk. In practice the risk of modern, monitored anaesthesia in a dog that has passed its bloodwork is low, while the risk of leaving painful infected teeth in place for another two years is not. Delay also raises the price, because disease that could have been managed with a clean turns into extractions. If cost is the reason for waiting, say so directly. Vets would generally rather stage the work than watch a dog go untreated.
Book in February. Pet Dental Month is real and many clinics discount the procedure by a meaningful margin. Ask for a written estimate that separates the cleaning, the X-rays and a likely extraction scenario, so you can see which part is variable. Ask what the clinic does if it finds more than expected: a call for consent mid-procedure is normal and you should know the number they will ring. And treat home dental care as the actual saving. Daily brushing, or the closest thing you will realistically keep up, is what lengthens the gap between dentals, and the gap is where the money is.
Routine dental cleaning is a preventive procedure, and most policies exclude preventive care unless you have bought a wellness add-on. Dental disease that requires extractions is treated differently by different insurers, and many require proof of an annual dental check to pay at all. Read the dental clause specifically rather than assuming your accident and illness cover extends to the mouth, because this is one of the most common refused claims.
Dental pricing varies more by city than almost any other routine procedure, because it is driven by clinic overheads, equipment and anaesthetic staffing rather than by drug costs. We publish current ranges for dental cleaning alongside the other procedures in the index, in local currency, for every city and country we cover. Look up yours before you ring around, so the first quote you hear is one you can already judge.
We build a national typical range from published clinic price lists, veterinary association fee surveys and real bills owners submit to us, then apply a city multiplier for local rent, wages and clinic density. Non-Canadian markets scale the same base by national price level. Figures are estimates in local currency before tax, never quotes. Once three verified bills exist for a city and procedure, the real bills replace the estimate.

Because cleaning below the gum line is where the disease is, and no conscious dog will hold still for a probe, a scaler and X-rays. Anaesthesia-free dentals only polish the visible surface, which changes how the teeth look without treating what hurts.
Almost always extractions or dental X-rays. The quote covers the clean; the mouth is only fully assessed once the dog is asleep, and anything found then is charged separately.
About two thirds of a tooth sits below the gum. Without X-rays a vet cannot see root abscesses, fractures or bone loss, so painful teeth get left behind and you pay again sooner.
It is charged per tooth and varies enormously by which tooth. A loose incisor is quick; a multi-rooted molar in a large dog is oral surgery. Ask your clinic for its per-tooth banding.
It depends on the dog. Small breeds and flat-faced breeds crowd their teeth and often need one every year or two; some large breeds go much longer. Your vet grades the mouth at each annual exam.
Not automatically, but ask what is included. Bloodwork, intravenous fluids, a dedicated monitoring nurse and dental X-rays are the items most often missing from a low quote.
Routine cleaning is preventive and usually excluded unless you hold a wellness add-on. Treatment for dental disease may be covered, but many insurers require evidence of annual dental checks first.
Age is not a disease. What matters is the pre-anaesthetic exam and bloodwork. For most senior dogs that pass those, leaving infected teeth in place is the greater risk.
They help slow plaque, they do not remove tartar that has already hardened. Daily brushing is the only home measure that reliably lengthens the gap between professional cleanings.
